Professor Theodore Christakis, Director of the Chair, will join a distinguished panel at the 9th edition of the Privacy Symposium in Brussels on 14 October 2025.
The discussion will explore the complex interplay between the GDPR and the EU AI Act—particularly two pressing issues:
- Which GDPR legal basis is most appropriate for the training of AI systems; and
- How the use of sensitive data for bias detection and correction in AI systems aligns with the GDPR.
The panel will reflect on these challenges by addressing the following questions:
- What have we learned from the guidance of Data Protection Authorities on applying the GDPR to the development and deployment of AI systems?
- What are the key elements of emerging practices for training AI systems, including GPAI models, in ways that comply with the GDPR and respect its principles?
- To what extent can technical and policy tools, including anonymisation, resolve legal tensions between the GDPR and the AI Act?
